To
mark the 75th anniversary of The Ramblers, thirty
members and guests of the Lower Wye Group went on
a ‘Baton Walk’ around Chepstow. The ‘baton’
is being symbolically passed between nearly three
hundred groups who are holding walks across England,
Wales and Scotland throughout 2010. They also hope
to ‘pass the baton’ on to future generations
of walkers. |

The
walk started at historic Chepstow Castle, founded soon
after the Norman Conquest in a strategic position high
above the river Wye, and then followed the Wye Valley
Walk through the Piercefield Estate, part of the recently
restored walks built by Valentine Morris in the 18th
century as part of the romantic Picturesque Movement.
|
| The
group then cut through to St Arvans and gradually climbed
to walk around Gaer Hill which afforded excellent views
of the Severn estuary and both Severn crossings. Open
farmland, and a series of stiles recently restored by
group volunteers, followed in glorious spring sunshine
before the group stopped for lunch amidst much evidence
of the busy lambing season. |

The walk dropped down through Rogerstone Court and
through Cockshoot and Barnets Woods to Mounton Lane
and eventually back to the Castle grounds.
